This podcast features Peter Jackson, former CEO to Melbourne Football Club. Peter currently consults in organisation design and strategy, leadership and executive coaching. He has worked for Rio Tinto as a business analyst, moved into the manufacturing industry focussing on restructuring businesses and one day got a call from Essendon Football Club asking if he’d be interested in the CEO role available. Since that call he has spent 22 years changing organisational leadership and culture in football.
How do you move a culture in a direction where you can make meaningful progress?
“You have to keep telling the story about what’s possible. And it’s true that a lot of people don’t believe you. Because they go back to the past… It’s a long process to actually make people believe that things can work.”
“Going to work is the most significant use of your time as a human being. You’re going to work from 20-70years old… [As leaders] You’ve got to make a connection as to why people want to go to work? And people work for a whole lot of different reasons. If you’re going into an environment that you really feel good about, you’ll work better. And because you want to be there you get better output as a company. To me there is a direct correlation between profit and how people feel working for you.”
Peter not only has the experience and accolades in turning a football club around and making it desirable for future footballers and fans. If you’re interested in understanding culture and how to attract and bring people to a brand then listen to Peter’s experience and his story.
