Tell us about this person and how you originally came across them?

"Ivan is a Diesel Fitter and he actually replied to one of our ads but he didn't quite have the right experience at the time. He was really trying to crack into the industry and wanted some advice as to how he could go about doing so. He told me he had a thick Ukrainian accent, so it was probably best to keep it to emails at that time, and I remember ringing him one day, and it was really thick and quite hard to understand.

He was a genuine guy and he told me about his story in the Ukraine and how he wanted to get into the mines locally, he was working as a mechanic and no one would give him a chance. I spoke to the client after at Mount Isa and told them he didn’t have the ideal experience, but I’d done a background check on him, and I thought he would be a great cultural fit. They did the phone interview with him and it was quite challenging to get through with the accent, but he got up there and worked with us for 6 months before going permanent. 4 years later he reached out when his project finished and told me he was on the market again. I went and spoke to another client, and after his good review from Mt Isa they took him on too, and he worked with us again for another year, then went permanent and he is still out there right now."

As a consultant, what did you take away most from this experience?

"Just again the fact he was so appreciative of the opportunity; it's those feel good moments. When we speak it is a pleasure to deal with him because we have that good working relationship even though I’ve only ever met him the once."

Do you feel you were able to impact them positively in the experience? Was there anything they did that left an impact on you?

"It’s the fact that he went from working so hard, trying to get ahead here in Brisbane and he didn’t have a problem working away. He has demonstrated that by sticking to these roles and being out there for so long, and we’ve nearly doubled his salary from working here so that’s changed his life significantly."

Where are they now? Have you had contact or followed their progress since?

"Last contact was probably about 6 months ago and he is still in the last role I placed him at. It is always good to chat to and he’s always excited to hear from me."

How did our work as a recruiter change the life of the candidate?

"I think it’s the recruiter piece of having the right contacts and relationship with the client but also the combination of his approach. There is an eb and flow with these roles, and I think that his life has been impacted for the better."
