There’s no doubt that it is an exciting time to be involved in the mining industry. We are currently inundated with a large volume of maintenance vacancies in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley coal fields from Mining houses, Tier 1 contractors and OEM’s. Finding trades personnel with mining equipment experience that can hit the ground running is becoming more and more difficult as the skills gap increases.
After working through the downturn and being part of many cost saving initiatives with our clients, the industry is again experiencing an increase in overpriced sub-contractors that are charging premiums. The mining sector is again becoming a victim to ensuring production goals are being met at any cost.
With most companies now planning for an autonomous future and running trucks overtime to meet output needs I predict an increase in the need for maintainers.
In light of these issues, I have highlighted a long-term solution that we have successfully ran over the last 6 months. It is a true win/win solution for our clients but also gives people an opportunity to enter the mining sector under much more sustainable commercial terms.
Transferrable Skills
We have created various training programs with our clients to upskill candidates from similar or likeminded industries. We are targeting industries such as construction, energy, oil and gas, defence and agriculture.
We designed these programs with the goal of ultimately on-boarding large teams faster and in a more cost-effective program whilst producing real results for both the employee and company.
The critical areas we focused on were Diesel Fitters, Drill Fitters, HV Electricians and Tyre Fitters.
These programs are a win for job seekers who appreciated the opportunity to develop and enables mining companies to build high functioning teams that are able to increase the overall business productivity.
If you would like to know more about breaking into the mining industry or a client that is interested in commencing a trade-upskilling program, please feel free to send me a message or get in touch with our trusted Recruitment Consultant - Hannah Webb.
